Alt text: Resume format for ECE and EEE freshers — one page, projects first — PEPS-TECH, Hosur

"No experience" is the wrong way to read your own resume. You have four years of labs, projects, a language or two and a department you understand. What you do not have is a job history, and that is a formatting problem, not a disqualification.

We read resumes every intake season at PEPS-TECH. The ones that get calls are built the same way. Here is that build.

One page. Not two.

A fresher resume that runs to two pages is padded, and the padding is what the reader notices first. One page forces the edit that makes you look senior.

The only exception is a candidate with real publications or a patent. Internships, workshops and certificates are not that exception.

The order that works

Put what is strongest nearest the top. For a fresher, that is almost never education.

Section

Lines

Why it sits there

Name and contact

2

Phone, email, GitHub, city. No photo, no age, no address block

Summary

2–3

What you build and what you want. Cut it if it is generic

Projects

12–18

Your only real evidence. This is the body of the resume

Technical skills

4–5

Grouped, honest, no rating bars

Internships / training

3–6

What you did, not what the company does

Education

2–3

Degree, college, year, CGPA

Extras

1–2

Only if they say something: NSS lead, robotics club, a language

If you have a strong internship with shipped work, swap it above Projects. Otherwise Projects leads.

Write projects as results, not parts lists

This is where most freshers lose the call. A parts list reads as a kit assembled. A result reads as a problem solved.

Weak: "Smart irrigation system using Arduino, soil moisture sensor, relay module and GSM."

Strong: "Soil-moisture irrigation controller (ATmega328, GSM). Cut manual watering trips from daily to twice a week on a 0.5-acre test plot. Wrote the sensor driver and the SMS alert path; calibrated against gravimetric readings with ~8% error."

The second version names a measurement, a scope and your specific contribution. Three lines per project, two or three projects, and the body of your resume is done.

For every project, answer these four in the lines you write: what problem, what you built, what you measured, what was yours versus the team's.

Skills: group them, and never rate them

List in groups a hiring manager scans: Languages, Hardware, Tools, Protocols. Drop the five-star bars and percentage meters — nobody believes them and they cost you space.

The rule for every line: if you cannot answer two follow-up questions on it, cut it. "MATLAB" on a resume invites a MATLAB question.

Keep it readable by the software that reads it first

Many companies run resumes through parsing software before a person sees them. Keep it simple: single column, no text boxes, no tables for layout, a standard font, and the file saved as PDF with a sensible name — Rajesh_K_ECE_2026.pdf, not resume_final2.pdf.

Mirror the words in the job posting where they are honestly true. A posting asking for "embedded C and CAN" should find "Embedded C" and "CAN" in your skills line, spelled the same way.

The skeleton, copy it

PROJECTS
Soil-moisture irrigation controller (ATmega328, GSM) | Jan-Apr 2026
- Cut watering trips from daily to twice weekly on a 0.5-acre test plot
- Wrote the sensor driver and SMS alert path; ~8% error vs gravimetric
- github.com/rajeshk/irrigation

CAN bus data logger (STM32F103, SD card) | Aug-Nov 2025
- Logged 500 frames/sec to SD without loss using DMA + ring buffer
- Debugged bus errors with a logic analyser; documented the frame format

SKILLS
Languages: Embedded C, Python, basic C++
Hardware: STM32, ESP32, ATmega328, logic analyser, oscilloscope
Protocols: UART, I2C, SPI, CAN, MQTT
Tools: Git, STM32CubeIDE, PlatformIO, KiCad (basic)

TRAINING
Embedded systems and IoT, PEPS-TECH, Hosur | Jun-Jul 2025
- 6-week hands-on program; built and defended the CAN logger above

EDUCATION
B.E. Electronics and Communication, <College> | 2022-2026 | CGPA 8.1

Seven mistakes that cost calls

  1. A photo, age, father's name or marital status. Not asked for, and it pushes your projects below the fold.

  2. "Hardworking team player with good communication skills." Every resume says it, so it says nothing.

  3. Listing ten technologies you touched once. Depth is checked in the interview; breadth just widens the attack surface.

  4. A projects section that is a parts list. Covered above — it is the single biggest fix available to you.

  5. A GitHub link to an empty profile. Worse than no link. Push the code first, even if it is messy.

  6. Declaration and signature at the bottom. A holdover from older formats. Use the space for a project line.

  7. One resume for every company. Reorder the skills line and the summary for each posting. Ten minutes per application.

Before you send it

  • One page, single column, PDF, named properly

  • Two or three projects with a measured result each

  • Every skill listed survives two follow-up questions

  • GitHub link works and has code behind it

  • Phone number and email checked by actually calling and mailing yourself

  • Read aloud once, to catch the sentences that say nothing

Frequently asked questions

What if I genuinely have no projects yet? Build one in six weeks and write the resume after. A single working project with measurements beats any wording trick. Until then, lead with coursework you can defend — a lab, a design assignment, a simulation you ran.

Should I include my school marks? No. Degree, college, year and CGPA are enough. Tenth and twelfth marks only if a specific company asks for them in the application form.

Does a low CGPA kill my chances? It closes the doors of companies that screen on it, which is not all of them. Product startups and small firms in Hosur and Bangalore interview on skill. Make the projects section strong enough that the CGPA is the second thing read.

Should the resume be one column or two? One. Two-column layouts look designed and parse badly, and a fresher resume has no content that needs a sidebar.

How often should I update it? Every time a project reaches a milestone, not the night before an application. The version you send should always be a month old at most.
